School has started and fall is around the corner!  Fall is my favorite season; with the air becoming crisp and temperatures falling below triple digits. (For those in Texas, you know what I’m talking about!)  The season brings warm colors, seasonal flavors and scents of spice.

This is the season for making changes to your wardrobe and home in preparation for the cooler weather.

Get Your Wardrobe Ready for Fall:

With a few tweaks you can easily go from summer to fallOlive & Black Flax Fall 2015.  Take your favorite dress, skirt or pant and mix, match and layer with a jacket, cardigan or long-sleeved top in colors of this fall.

The Must Have Trends for Fall:

A wide spectrum of styles from Bohemian to the 60’s and 70’s inspiration are present.

Flared or wide leg trousers and jeans, turtleneck tops, long-line blazers and cardigans, the trench coat, bulky knit sweaters, cool hosiery and leggings in fresh colors and geometric patterns, fringed jewelry and accessories, 60’s/70’s retro earrings, Art Deco rings and maxi length skirts and dresses are must haves for fall.  Patchwork leather and suede, fur (faux is great) trimmed collars, pockets and in-between, and structured handbags are also the trend for the season.

As for Beauty:

For fall olive green for nails or eyes and blues of all kinds for eyes with sheer white nails.  Braids are returning with a bit more polished rather than loose look and hair accessories (clips, barrettes and headbands) are back.  Pink and reds shift to orange tones and darker shades for lips.

For the Home:

Furniture is shifting from mid-century and modern styles to softer, cozier furniture.  Old and new mixed together continues to be on trend.  Colors from the fashion runways have inspired the season’s decor colors of olive, soft navy, hunter green, garnet, ruby, brick red, sapphire and cobalt blue.  Gray is definitely the top neutral for walls.  It is the perfect backdrop for all decor styles.  Greige, not quite gray, but not quite beige is the perfect neutral background working well with warm and cool accent colors.  Colorful accents can be easily swapped as your tastes change.

The top design trend is all about introducing touches of luxury by using warm metals of brass, gold and warm nickel.  To avoid the look of the 90’s keep warm metals to a minimum as a statement, select metals with low shine for a more vintage look or choose deep copper tones as a bridge between brighter warm metals and dark heavier industrial metals.

If you like chevron but are ready for something different – try honeycomb or other geometric shapes. Layer small and large scale patterns within the room for interest or subtly introduce geometric shapes Vintage Rug 2015with a rug or mirror.

This fall is the time to bring warmth and nature into your home. Happy decorating!

The hot days of summer have arrived and you want to stay COOL! Here are some great tips for beating the heat.

  • Cotton and linen are not only great for summertime clothing, but also bedding.  Choose cotton-linen blend sheets and coverlets for a cooler night’s sleep. Select light colors to freshen up your room and make it look and feel cooler.

Summer - Beat the Heat

Summer - Beat the Heat

  • Ice Ice, Baby!  Start the day feeling wide awake, fresh and cool with a mini ice facial.  Beat the heat with this inexpensive, simple and refreshing beauty tip.  Just take an ice cube, wrap in a cloth or paper towel and GENTLY massage in a circular motion over your face until the ice cube has melted.  This is super refreshing on a hot summer day and your skin will be rejuvenated!  Do a mini ice facial at night time and wake up with beautifully smooth soft skin.  The ice tightens pores like a toner, constricts blood vessels and improves circulation; leaving you with a fresh, rosy glow.
  • Keep your body temperature cooler by eating refreshing cold foods like fresh fruits, vegetables and ice cream!
  • For a refreshing cold drink try filling a large container with water, ice, fresh fruit and mint.

 Ahh…so good!

 Pina Colada Sorbet

Here’s a creamy, cold and wonderful summertime dessert recipe to cool you down!

Pina Colada Sorbet

Serves 8

1 ½ cups white sugar                                                                           1 (13.5 ounce) can coconut milk

1 ½ cups water                                                                                        ¼ cup lime juice

1 (20 ounce) can canned crushed pineapple, drained

  1. Make a syrup by bringing the sugar and water to a boil in a small saucepan over high heat.  Stir and boil until the liquid becomes clear, about 1 minute. Set aside to cool.
  2. Blend the drained pineapple in a blender or food processor until very smooth and frothy.  In a large bowl, whisk together the syrup, pineapple puree, coconut milk and lime juice. Refrigerate until chilled about 3 hours.
  3. Freeze in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s directions.

We hope you find inspiration for your home and wardrobe from our tips, pictures and DIY projects.
